Rutherford Scattering with Retardation

چکیده
Numerical solutions for Sommerfeld model in nonrelativistic case are presented for the scattering of a spinless extended charged body in a static Coulomb field of a fixed point charge. It is shown that differential cross section for extended body preserves the form of the Rutherford result with multiplier, not equal to one (as in classical case), but depending on the size of Sommerfeld particle. Also the effect of capture by attractive center is found out for Sommerfeld particle. The origin of this effect lies in radiation damping. 03.50.De

Rutherford Scattering of α-Particles
The scattering of α-particles off of gold foil was investigated. Attenuation of the α-particle beam was used to measure the thickness of the gold foil used. The coefficient of the Rutherford differential scattering cross section was experimentally determined to be (7.81 ± 5.35) × 10−25cm2, compared to 1.76 × 10−24cm2, with a reduced chi-squared of 3.4, which is a reasonable fit and confirms the...
متن کاملRutherford Scattering with Radiation Damping
We study the effect of radiation damping on the classical scattering of charged particles. Using a perturbation method based on the Runge-Lenz vector, we calculate radiative corrections to the Rutherford cross section, and the corresponding energy and angular momentum losses.

In the beginning of the 20th century, physicists had begun to determine the structure of atoms. J.J. Thomson had discovered the presence of electrons negatively charged particles with a mass much less than the overall mass of the electron using cathode rays[1]. Thomson further hypothesized that the full structure of the atom consisted of electrons surrounded by a ”soup” of positive charge. This...

Quasielectron electron scattering from gaseous H2, D2, a 50:50 mixture of H2 and D2, and HD is investigated with 2.25 keV impact energy and a momentum transfer variant Planck's over 2piq of 19.7 a.u. The energy transfer is less than the dissociation energy. The spectral positions of the H and D recoil peaks agree with Rutherford scattering theory. Surprisingly, in the spectrum of the 50:50 H2-D...

100 years ago, in 1911, Rutherford explained the observed surprising behavior of alpha particles scattering from a gold foil, leading to the discovery of the nucleus. In this problem we want to derive from quantum-mechanics scattering theory the expression for Rutherford cross-section for electrons. The system is described by an electron and a nucleus, for convenience enclosed in a cavity of vo...
